Reuter ordered Jürgen Schrempp, the company’s vice-president, to study the possibility of taking over Fokker, a company which was at the time in serious trouble but which was widely regarded in the Netherlands as a company of national importance. The vice-president’s advise about an acquisition turned out to be positive and after painstaking negotiations with suspicious Dutch managers and politicians, Schrempp was able to announce that Daimler-Benz was going to hold a 51 percent controlling stake in the new “love-baby”, as he himself preferred to call Fokker.

First, I will briefly discuss some micro-economic contributions to strategic studies all of which were claimed to ignore the realities that were interesting for management practitioners. Then, I will discuss the pragmatic twist inspired by people like Porter or Wernerfelt who have, from a variety of perspectives, argued that students of strategy should help practitioners with the explanation and achievement of strategic success.

That is, to understand behavior of economic agents one has to come to grips with psychological, philosophical, and legalistic realities. Psychology One of the sources of inspiration in the new interdisciplinary approach was cognitive psychology. People like Herbert Simon pointed out that it was simply “unrealistic to expect managers to meet the stringent requirements of wholly rational behavior”, as did the classical macro-economic approach (Miller, Hickson, and Wilson 1996: 295; my emphasis).
