A room that is too hot or cold can affect recording, as can excess noise in the environment. A great number of individuals unconsciously grit their teeth, and this can introduce high levels of artifact into temporal lobe readings, and sometimes globally. Others have high muscle tension in their neck that generates excessive artifact in the posterior leads. 28 Fortunately, most of the EEG power is below roughly 26 Hz. In spite of all of these problems, once a cap is placed on the head and gel is injected into the electrodes, an acceptable EEG usually can be collected within 45 minutes by a practiced technician.

There are many other collection methods used in medical EEG, and these are referred to as montages. A few of the databases allow practitioners to reconfigure the montage through programming techniques. A popular one is the Laplacian montage, which is a form of weighted averaging. The weighted average reference compares each electrode to all other electrodes in a given array, and weighting factors are based on actual scalp interelectrode distances. Weighting factors are usually calculated as inverse linear distances: the longer the distance from the input, the less the surrounding electrodes will contribute to the reference.

OTHER FACTORS AFFECTING DATA Amplifier characteristics are an important consideration. EEG signals collected from the scalp are very weak – in the microvolt range – and require several stages of amplification before they can be processed and analyzed. Amplifiers vary in their construction and the efficiency with which they amplify different frequencies, and have the potential to distort values. Older analogue amplifiers used to collect EEG were often less efficient than more modern amplifiers, and more subject to noise and artifact because of low input impedance.
