Of course, such a simple statement is in need of some explanation, which is what this chapter is all about. Thus we will need to look into differences and similarities and show how they can be both advantages and obstacles in groupwork. There are also all the ideas about self-identity, and the use of awareness and intelligence to change moulds of behaviour. Above all, it must be stressed that what we are aiming at is an understanding of the behaviour patterns which people have and which they employ in all situations but which in small groups become patterns that are much more visible.

The group is already in existence. It just happened. It arose from public or partially public advertisement. It arose from a large public meeting which split into smaller group units. It was created by individual selection from a known public. This list makes plain a fact, often ignored by groupworkers, that created groups are not necessarily the closed, intense-experience units which so often seem to be regarded as the norm. Such groups are only one end of a fairly large continuum, at the other end of which are large communities comprising many not too clearly defined smaller groups.

For what is obvious to one person is by no means necessarily equally obvious to another, who may have had no apparent reason for even starting to think about it. One of the basic misconceptions which besets human communication is exactly the unchecked assumption that the obvious appears so to all those involved. The real and absolute beginning of most groups is an idea. Someone somewhere decides that some objective, clear or vague, can be achieved effectively, or sometimes 13 BEGINNING AT THE BEGINNING safely, only by a number of people working together, in however a limited manner.
