Our committee has endeavored to take action, with nice curiosity and greater than a bit ardour.

The Committee on Undergraduate Physics schooling examine and Implementation was once confirmed in 2010 via the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the nationwide study Council. This document summarizes the committee's reaction to its assertion of activity, which calls for the committee to provide a file that identifies the objectives and demanding situations dealing with undergraduate physics schooling and identifies how most sensible practices for undergraduate physics schooling should be carried out on a common and sustained foundation, examine the prestige of physics schooling examine (PER) and speak about how in step with can help in attaining the objective of enhancing undergraduate physics schooling top practices and schooling coverage.

Undergraduate Physics Education In any given academic year, about 500,000 students take an introductory undergraduate physics course somewhere in the United States. Of those, 20 percent are at a 2-year college (White, 2012). Students take introductory physics for a variety of reasons. Some are attracted to the beauty and power of physics, which may lead to a major or minor in the subject, often beginning with an honors-level introductory course. For students pursuing degrees in education, the arts, social sciences, or humanities, their interests may lead them to enroll in a nonquantitative physics course (as with titles like “physics for poets” or “physics for future presidents”).

These numbers have implications for the design of programs that prepare majors to succeed in a variety of endeavors. However, for those physics majors who will be responsible for teaching physics to future generations, the undergraduate courses they take should serve as models for how the subject should be taught. Later in this chapter, some strategies for taking these factors into account are mentioned.
