There’s something really jarring about seeing emotionally resonant artwork in that form, so I think we were both interested in how we could stretch a form and fit something new into it.

Every single one is different because we have to figure out who’s going to make it. Right now, we’re involved in two different projects; one is being manufactured in China, and the other is being made in West Oakland. JH: But they’re both round. They’re spherical. CURRENT ISSUE JH: With Michelle Grabner’s issue that just came out, we talked about using gingham patterns, which is something she’s interested in from a mathematical, philosophical, and domestic standpoint. A review came out from her last show, and Ken Johnson wrote in the New York Times that her work was boring because it’s about her life, and that she’s a soccer mom.
